When I say graphic designing, people have a misconception that one must be excellent at drawing and that’s not true.
You don’t have to be a pro at drawing or have a degree in design to be a graphic designer. I believe that anyone can learn it if they are really interested in and passionate about it.
Next phase, you want to learn graphic design but how do you get started?
Here are some steps you can take and teach yourself graphic design.
- Learn design theories/basics
- Follow tutorials
- Take online courses
- Follow designer in social media
- Ask for help
Learn design terms/theories
Before you start anything about graphics design, you will need to learn the basics of design terms and theories.
Yes, I know it can be boring to learn about theories but trust me it will teach you standard design practice.
In theory, you begin by learning the basics of color, typography, form, space, lines, texture, and scale.
Also knowing basic terms will help you understand the practical tutorials more clearly.
You can always check youtube videos for this.
There are also books about design theory you can read.
Hands down, Youtube tutorials are the best way of learning.
When I first started the graphic design, I used to go through the random tutorial videos and try to copy it. That’s how I learned how to use the tools.
Here are some Youtube channels you can learn from:
Youtube has an endless amount of design tutorials you can go through.
Take online courses
Whether you struggle to learn by yourself or want more in-depth training, online courses are a great way to go. There are a number of free courses for graphic design you will find on the internet.
Programs such as Udemy, Envato Tuts+, Lynda, Skillshare offer a broad variety of courses and various methods of teaching.
Follow designers in social media
Following designers in social media can also give you ideas, inspiration, and knowledge about designing. Design-based accounts on Instagram are also providing lots of valuable content these days.
In the past few months, I have learned lots of tricks and tips from Instagram.
Here are some of the design-based Instagram account you can follow:
You can also follow designers on Dribble and Behance as they are more professional platforms.
Approach professional designer
It’s always a better idea to ask for help from someone from your niche. They can give you more ideas about it as they already have lots of experience. I am sure they will be more than happy to help you.
In my early days, I used to design and send it to one of my seniors for feedback and she helped me improve a lot. She also told me what I needed to work on.
So, don’t shy away to approach them and ask for help.
Trial and error is the only way to learn how to use the tools, apply design philosophies, and to develop your skills. You will need to give a lot of time practicing as it is the only way to make your design better.
Try setting a challenge for yourself. That can be as simple as making one illustration design a week.
